How to Choose Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Comfort, codec support and cancellation quality — the three things that matter more than the spec sheet.

How to Choose Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Start with how you'll actually use them

Noise cancellation is not one feature — it is a spectrum. Over-ear headphones with adaptive ANC will silence the low, constant hum of an aeroplane or office far better than they will a crying baby or a busy café.

Comfort beats specs

You can't enjoy great sound from headphones you want to take off after twenty minutes. Look for plush, replaceable earcups and a clamp force that sits firmly without pinching.

  • Check the weight — anything under 300g is comfortable for long sessions.
  • Look for replaceable pads so the purchase lasts.
  • Try multipoint pairing if you switch between laptop and phone.
Rule of thumb: buy for the environment you're actually in, not the one you imagine.

Codecs and battery

For most listeners, battery life and reliable Bluetooth matter more than exotic codecs. Aim for 30+ hours so you're not hunting for a charger every two days.
